Compaction
Compaction is the process in which sediment is pressed together. Thick layers eventually build up over the years. The layers on top press and press on the layers on the bottom. Then more thick layers develop and those compact on the layers underneath, squeezing them tightly together. When compaction is done, usually you can still see the layers.
